As a minister I'm often told to "keep my pistol loaded" but when it's said it's not meant in the literal sense. Well, they say time brings about a change and I guess they're right. Guns are becoming a familiar sight in todays churches and some argue that with the increase in violence against the church and anti-Christian sentiment that this is just what the church needs. some argue that lives could be saved if the church "stayed strapped" (as the youngsters say) These days fewer church goers are prepared to disagree. Of course those of us "in the know" so to speak, know that the real reason has a lot more to do with dead presidents than it does dead Christians. With the advent of the Mega-Church came mega-cash and apparently many of todays church leaders are adding a little extra insurance in the way of a loaded Glock "9" to go along with those prayers for traveling mercy just in case... but what does the word of God have to say about this? Is there scriptural justification for such measures or is this just another case of the church emulating the world? The opinion of this minister is that it is the latter, just another case of the church emulating the world, but more importantly let's look at what the author and finisher of our faith has to say.
Matthew 5:39 ~But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also.
Most people are familiar with the verse instructing us to turn the other cheek. Unfortunately in hurrying to on part of the scripture they overlook another part. The first point Christ makes is much more general. He specifically commands us to "resist not evil"
Let's look at another scripture.
Luke 3:14~And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.
Here, Jesus is speaking to a soldier and if you notice he does not equivocate or make excuses based on the soldiers position. His commandment is straight forward and plane. "Do violence to no man.
So, what is your opinion? is there a case for guns in the church? Will the lord understand when you explain to him that you had to "put a hot one" in someone because you were...protecting his money? Please leave a comment and goto our online poll.
